Migration over the North Atlantic

Photo: Migration over the North Atlantic

The main motivation for visiting Fair Isle in late September was of course to see and photograph the migrant birds which pass through the island at this time of year.

The photo above shows a flock of Pink-footed Geese flying over the sea before coming in to rest. Many hundreds were recorded each day I was there.

Pink-footed Geese breed in eastern Greenland, Iceland and Svalbard. The Greenland and Icelandic populations winter further south in Britain and Ireland.
