Iridescent Starling (Fair Isle Bling)

Photo: Iridescent Starling (Fair Isle Bling)

Shetland has it's own endemic sub-species of Starling, Sturnus vulgaris zetlandicus. The isolated Fair Isle population has been particularly closely studied for over thirty years. Many of the Starlings on the isle, such as the bird photographed above, have coloured rings to allow identification in the field.
