Purple Haze on a Fender Stratocaster

Photo: Purple Haze on a Fender Stratocaster

This year I’ve started to learn guitar on a second-hand Fender Stratocaster (photographed above). I’ve had fun in the process, particularly in following the courses on JustinGuitar.com.

First made in 1954, the “Strat” is a design legend - the most recognisable and enduring model of electric guitar, and the axe of choice for the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton.

Unfortunately I don’t think my rock career stands much any chance of success. Shetland though is famous for its music and has produced more than its fair share of musical talent over the years. Best known are Shetland’s fiddle players. However, Shetland is also host to an excellent Guitar Festival, held annually in honour of the late ‘Peerie’ Willie Johnson - a highly regarded guitarist from Shetland who “pioneered the jazz influenced accompaniment style now prevalent in traditional Shetland music”.
